It goes without saying that there are some very common Korean foods that every Korean should know. At one time or another, nearly everybody in Korea has had a chance to experience them. Here they are:
Soybean Soup – This is something that every single family in Korea eats. It goes by several names, such as ginseng soup and hour, but what is common among them all is the thick soup that comes from soybeans. There is an added flavor to the soup, as well, of course, of ginger and garlic. The whole meal often comes with side dishes like radishes and onions. Sometimes, sour soup is added for a bit of sourness to the taste.
One of the most common Korean cuisine dishes that people have come to know and love is pickle. There are a wide range of pickles to choose from, ranging from simple vinegar pickles to very spicy pickles, all created by mixing different spices together.
Pickles are always served with another Korean staple, white miso soup. In some cases, pickles are used as a side dish instead of soup. In some areas of Korea, however, pickles are served alongside main courses.
One of the things that separates Korean cuisine from its Japanese counterpart is the wide variety of sushi that can be made in both countries. In Japan, sushi is more of a simple preparation where ingredients are mixed together and cooked with a few specific cooking methods.
In Korea, however, the sushi is more of a fusion of Asian and Japanese food that often uses different ingredients altogether and is spiced up with different ingredients as well.
Globalize Korean Food
One of the first things that people who try out Korean identity dishes learn about this country’s culture is that they often use global food ingredients. This means that almost every meal in Korea can be prepared using any type of global cuisine ingredients that are available to them.
For example, unlike many other countries and cultures, in Korea almost anything goes when it comes to rice and noodles. Rather than being a staple food, this dish becomes a sort of cross between the two and can even be adjusted to make it a hearty and filling meal on its own.
The other thing that can separate the countries’ cuisines from one another is the use of different cooking methods. Korean cuisines tend to be very Spicy and are not very rich in butter or fat.
While this does not mean that their dishes cannot be delicious, there is a distinct lack of fat and grease in most Korean cuisines.
Some of the earliest foreign contact that Koreans have with other parts of the world can be traced back to Europe. Many Korean dishes were either adopted or modified by Europeans over time. Most notably was the Spanish occupation of Korea in the 14th century, which brought with it the practice of cooking in Spain. The Japanese occupation of Korea in the early twentieth century also brought with it a whole new set of influenced Korean food.
While the European cuisine of Korea was primarily rice based, most Korean dishes today are more meat based. The Korean taste for meat combined with the ability to experience foreign cultures has resulted in a whole new menu of dishes that are now offered at restaurants all over the world.
The above mentioned are just a few examples of how Korean food has endured throughout history. It has adopted the best of various cuisines and cooking methods and has blended the two to create something that is uniquely Korean. This is perhaps the one cuisine in the world that most people have not had the opportunity to try and truly enjoy.
